Pinballing thoughts and emotions? Do this..

assets.newatlas.jpg

Useless and incessant negative thoughts and fears bouncing around as a response to global events or recent interactions/experiences?

Is there something you need to gain clarity or insight on?

Well do this one thing...Journal (if you don't already do it that is)!

Be it thoughts, thoughts, ideas, fears, desires or maybe things that come up during your meditation practice. Journaling will help you "notice patterns in your thinking. And those patterns point to the very habits of thoughts and behaviour that you are seeking to understand, and perhaps, change."

Different types of journaling practices:

  • Stream of consciousness journalling: As your thoughts, flow so does the pen. This does not need to make any sense or coherence.

  • Dream journalling: Putting a notebook at the side of your bed, writing what you remember in you dreams. This could provide an insight into your subconscious.

  • Gratitude journalling: What are you grateful or thankful for in your life? Holding your little daughter's hand when you walked together last night, the good night kiss your partner gave you, the robust coffee that awakened your senses, the stars and the vastness of the night sky? It's all about the little things.

  • Sketch journalling: Doodle, draw out how you feel and the thoughts that you might have.

How to do it?

  1. You can start off with something like the 5 minute journal.

  2. Get a notebook this weekend or a piece of paper.

  3. Write with no inhibition.

As you have guessed. I am a fan of the pen and paper and not digital journalling which exists in the digital era we live in.

Why paper over digital? ⁣

⁣By writing, you activate different parts of your brain and connect more to each word written while being fully present.⁣

⁣I’ve been journalling for a while now and this process has been an outlet for me to unload mental chatter and find gratitude in the little things.⁣

The common roadblock is “what do I write?”, well..to help you along the way with your journalling journey, here are 31 entries/start to get this process going!
